1. Norman Thayer and Chelsea Thayer are Father and Daughter in real life too!

In the movie Norman and Chelsea had a strained and distant relationship, this isn't too far off from what their relationship was like in real life. During Jane's early years of acting she also began activism which her Father didn't necessarily support. When Henry first found out about this he thought of it as foolish and changed his viewpoint on his daughter. As this continued Jane described their relationship as "emotionally distant". Although their relationship wasn't the strongest in the end they were father and daughter which they bold accepted and knew deep down. This helped the movie to come alive and allowed their relationship to present as real and emotional across the screen.
2. Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda had never worked together prior to this film

Although these two played husband and wife they had never even met prior to this film. During filming they created a healthy and strong bond allowing their relationship to come to life.
3. Katharine Hepburn insisted on doing all of her own stunts

Despite Katharine's age of 74 she insisted on doing her own stunts. One scene in particular was her diving scene, Katharine was supposed to have a stunt double but she instead she insitsted on doing it herself.
4. The boat "Thayer IV" was sold for $35,910

When filming the movie there were a few boats used for crashing scenes but the real "Thayer IV" was saved, protected and eventually sold for $36,910.
5. On Golden Pond was filmed in New Hampshire

The movie was filmed in central New Hampshire on both Big Squam Lake and Little Squam Lake. The screenwriter spent his summers on Great Pond in Maine which inspired him to write this film and produce it somewhere close and similar to Great Pond. Also the house on Squam Lake was leased for several months just for the purpose of this movie.
